Getting started

What you receive, and what you need before you open the project.

Every template is a complete Expo application. When you download one you receive the full project directory — screens, components, navigation, theme, typed sample data, configuration and this documentation — with no obfuscated files and no runtime dependency on our servers.

These are production codebases rather than tutorials. You should be comfortable running an Expo project and editing TypeScript before you start.

What you need

  • Node.js 20 or newer
  • A package manager: npm, pnpm or yarn
  • Xcode 15+ to run the iOS simulator (macOS only)
  • Android Studio with an emulator image, to run Android
  • A physical device with Expo Go, if you prefer testing on hardware

A note on versions

Each template's detail page lists the exact Expo SDK version it targets. Upgrading the SDK yourself is supported but is your responsibility; the version you downloaded is the version we tested.
